5 Simple Beach Activities for Kids That Build Math Thinking

We love that the sand creates a giant sensory box that children can use to help them explore different math concepts. The beach also has tons of free math manipulatives! Shells, rocks, and sand are natural counters, sortable objects, and building materials which can serve as great supports as children explore various math concepts. Here are five simple beach activities for kids to try on your next trip to the sand that are fun and help keep math skills strong over the summer.



1. Collect and Count Seashells


Shell collecting is already a favorite beach activity, making it the perfect starting point for playful math exploration.

Ask your child to gather a handful of shells and count how many they collected.


Then try questions like:

  • Can you sort the shells by size, color, or shape?

  • Which group has more? How do you know?

  • How many shells do you think are in your bucket? Let's estimate first, then count to check.


These small questions build number sense and give kids a reason to count for a purpose, rather than just reciting numbers in order. 2. Build Arrays for Repeated Addition and Multiplication


After counting your collection of shells, you can organize them in even rows and columns to make an array. This is a wonderful, hands-on way to introduce the idea behind repeated addition and, for older kids, multiplication.


  • Arrange 3 rows of 4 shells and ask, "How many shells are there altogether? How could we figure that out without counting one by one?"

  • Encourage your child to describe what they see: "3 groups of 4" or "4 added three times."

  • Rearrange the same shells into a different array (like 2 rows of 6) and ask what's the same and what's different.


Seeing multiplication as groups of objects helps children understand why the math works rather than just attempting to memorize a bunch of facts (which can be stressful, anxiety inducing, and unproductive). 3. Draw and Name Shapes in the Sand


A smooth patch of wet sand is all you need for some playful geometry.


Try taking turns:

  • Draw a shape and have your child name it.

  • Describe a shape ("I have three sides and three corners.") and let your child draw it.

  • Challenge your child to find shapes around the beach, such as a triangular sail, a sphere beach ball, or a rectangular towel.


You can extend the activity by creating simple patterns with the shapes you draw.

For example:

Circle, triangle, circle, triangle...


Ask your child what comes next and how they know.

Activities like this strengthen spatial reasoning, an important part of mathematical thinking.



4. Create Symmetrical Beach Art


Symmetry is everywhere at the beach! You can find it in shells, starfish, sandcastles, and so on! You can talk about the symmetry that you see and also create your own symmetrical designs in the sand. 


  • Draw a line down the middle of a patch of sand and build a design on one side using shells, rocks, or seaweed.

  • Ask your child to "mirror" your design on the other side of the line.

  • Switch roles and let your child create the design for you to match.

  • Talk about it as you go: "What do you notice is the same on both sides? What would make it symmetrical?"


Talking about what stays the same on each side helps children build an understanding of symmetry through play.


5. Add and Subtract with Shells as Manipulatives


Shells also make wonderful manipulatives for exploring addition and subtraction, since kids can physically move, combine, and take away objects as they solve a problem.


  • Give your child two small piles of shells and ask, "How many shells altogether if we put these piles together?"

  • Start with a larger pile, take some away, and ask, "How many are left?"

  • Turn it into a simple story: "You found 7 shells, then a wave washed 2 away — how many do you have now?"

  • Let your child physically move the shells as they figure out the answer, rather than solving it in their head right away.

A day at the beach can be a wonderful reminder that math doesn't only happen at school. It happens wherever  children are curious enough to notice it.
